I’ve Paid The Price

The sun bestows its amber glow,
Birds' sweet songs fill the air.
Coddled dreams return to sleep
Unspoiled from the wear.

Zephyr wind blows flowered fields,
Awakening the senses.
Reflections of a lover past
Squelched by my defenses.

Have I not paid the price for love?
Felt sorrow's sad caress
Beguiled by beauty's sweet disguise,
Enamored and impressed?

But, ask me not to try again.
No, that path I’ll not wander
On unknown heartaches still to come,
My feelings not to squander.
